Tuesday, October 7:  I had lunch at the Italian Kitchen in Dupont on 17th Street, DC.  From here I drove to the
Outer Banks.  I found a place in Nags head, the Manor Motel, where I stayed for two nights.  I had dinner at a
local Bar/Restaurant.  I met some nice people at the bar.
Wednesday, October 8:  I had brunch at Sam & Omie’s Restaurant, which is a landmark in Nags Head since
1937.  I climbed the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, located on the northern end of the Outer Banks.  The Outer
Banks has had a long history of ship wrecks off of its coast.  Over 600 ships have gone down in this area alone.
The Currituck Lighthouse was the last remaining dark spot on the Outer Banks.  It was completed in December
of 1875 and stands 158 feet high.  From here I drove to the Wright Brother’s National Memorial.  I listened to a
guide give the history of man’s discover of flight.  He gave the presentation in front of an exact replica of the
Wright Flyer.  The first powered flight was accomplished at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks.  The Wright
brothers had been coming every summer for years perfecting their hang glider.  They finally had an engine and
propellers mounted on there plane and took to the sky in December 17th of 1903.
Thursday, October 9:  I drove south on the Outer Banks to get a feel for the area.  It was very beautiful,
especially when you leave the towns and get in to the protected areas.  In the parkland, Pea Island National
Wildlife Refuge, there are rolling dunes that come right up to the road and stretches of trees.  In many places the
land narrows so that you can see water on both sides of the road within a quarter mile of each other.  Because of
the recent hurricane and the fact that it destroyed a section of the main road, you couldn’t drive to Cape Hatterus
or take the ferry to the mainland.  From the Outer Banks I drove to Wilmington, NC and checked in to the Best
Western in Wilmington, NC.

Friday, October 10:  Checked out of the Best Western.  I drove around Wilmington, NC historic district.  I
took a few photos of the historic mansions, including the Bellamy Mansion and the Latimer House.  A well known
site in Wilmington is the Battleship North Carolina.  This ship served in “Every major naval offensive in the Pacific
in World War II."  Today it is a memorial for all to visit.  I drove by this impressive ship and observed it from a
distance.  From Wilmington I drove to Myrtle Beach, SC.
